After walking through the 3rd tunnel dug by the North Koreans to attack Seoul. It was found in 1978. It was only 44 km. from Seoul and 30,000 troops could get through in one hour.

At the Dorisan Observatory. We could see North Korea from the top and look through binoculars. There was a "photo line" so it was difficult to get pictures. They are afraid of photos getting leaked on the internet and into the wrong hands.

The train station at Dorsan. This was running up to two years ago, but now it just sits here. There is a train that run weekly bringing in South Korean workers to a North Korean factory to manufacture goods. The goods are then brought back to South Korea.

Uh oh...here comes the train. It is coming from South Korea, heading to North Korea.

There was an equestrian show where they did all kinds of trick on the horses.

We waited all day to see a traditional wedding ceremony at the folk village. Come to find out it's a real persons wedding in the middle of this village museum with all kinds of Koreans and foreigners taking pictures. Very romantic....right?

This past weekend I went to Jinju with some girls from work. It was a four hour bus ride from Seoul, but so worth it! We slept in a tent and had two days to enjoy the weather and the festival!

Seoul Tower

So, here is North Seoul Tower. We took a cable car up to the top instead of walking the stairs....we were lazy!
At the top of the tower there are places where you can put "locks of love" It was a project started a few years ago and basically couples purchase a lock (big or small) and write a message to leave at the tower. They than "throw" the key away and the message is their forever.
Lots and lots of locks! This wall surrounded the entire observations deck...thousands.

Looking up to the tower. That higher point is an observation deck. You had to pay extra money, so I didn't go up. I might go next time when Terrence is with me too. This time I just went with the girls.

This week is Chuesok in Korea (Thanksgiving). We only had school on Monday so we played some traditional Korean games with the kids. One is similar to hop-scotch and the other is where the children throw arrows into a round pot. It was lots of fun. You can also see the Fall crowns we made :)

Mudfest 2010:Boryeong, Korea

This weekend we went to the 2010 Mud Festival in Boryeong,Korea....Google it. We had so much fun! The first day we did boot camp at the mud beach. Pictures of that are not on here, because I used a disposable camera. It was pouring rain the whole time and so messy! Saturday afternoon we went to the actual Festival. It was an amazing time. There was so much to do, and almost all of it was free! Enjoy the pictures!Couples mud slide....yes...... it was awesome!

Last week we got a new student in A-Room. Her name is Christina, and she will only be in A-Room for two weeks. She is from America, and visiting Korean family for a few months. She cried the first two days of class, but now is so happy now!

Cooking Class: "Red-Bean Ice"

For cooking class this month we made red bean ice. It's shaved ice with red beans, milk, candies, cereal, and all kinds of things. I thought it was really sweet, but the kids loved it.

Show and Tell

This week was "Summer Activity" for show and tell. Peter brought in a life vest, goggles, swimsuit and swim cap (all kids where them here). Look at his cheeks <3>

Jack forgot show and tell, so I gave him my sunglasses. Each student, obviously, had to try them on too. We spent 15 minutes modeling Megan Teacher's sunglasses.

Last week we went to see the "Little Dragon" musical in English. The kids loved it, and have been singing the songs in class every since. They are hysterical. It is hard to believe I will be leaving them in 4 short months :(

Terrence's Darangee Village Trip

Last weekend I went to Darangee Village on Namhae Island of the south coast of Korea. It was fantastic. Below are photos that I took of my weekend. It was an experience I will never forget.

The octopus that I caught with my bare hands after the tide went out!!!

Below is the last picture I have of my pet octopus.... I had already eaten half it raw and wriggling......

Lunch was all hand caught in a fish trap in a near by cove. We where in knee deep water grabbing decent sized mackerel right out of the water. You had the option of eating it raw or grilled. I did both. Best fish I have ever had.

I was not only able to stay with a Korean host family in their small village home but also they fed me a traditional Korean breakfast. I do not have a picture of breakfast but it was Fish and Korean side dishes, one out of the 14 dishes on the breakfast table was what I consider breakfast food, it was something resembling an omletish thing. With that said I still found it delicious.

Below are pictures of the rice fields that I was able to plow with an ox and then plant with the villagers.

Apartment Fire!

I think many of you have already seen this, but, here it is. Last week, there was a fire in the apartment building next to us. It was a gas range fire, and took about an hour to finally put it out. It was pretty scary, how close it was to our window. We don't think anyone got hurt, and the good news it that the fire trucks showed up within two minutes of the fire starting!

One of my students brought a lemon for Show and Tell. The kids thought I was little crazy when I cut it up, and told them to eat it. They each took a piece and started running around eating them and yelling. I haven't laughed so hard in a while. One boy was almost in tears yelling "Noooo Lemon".

This Sunday we to Olympic Park and had a picnic. It was like 87 degrees, and a little windy, so it was perfect. We both got a little sun, read a little, and just relaxed!

Lotus Lantern Festival and Buddha's Birthday!

This week we are celebrating Buddha's Birthday here in Korea. On Sunday, we went to the Lotus Lantern Festival in Insadong. It was a Festival full of food, crafts, and all kinds of other things all along the streets. Then there was a 2.5 hour parade. It was dark, so some of the pictures are grainy. It was really cool, and we were happy we got to experience it! ENJOY!

Nami Island 2

After spending the night in the house LCI rented we made our way to Nami Island. It's a man made island set in the middle of the Han River in Chuncheon, Korea. It's an imaginary "country" with its own fake passport. It's kind of like a theme park/ nature park. There was all kinds of entertainment, gardens, sculptures and much to see about traditional Korean customs. Also, there are several ostriches that roam freely around the island. You will see pictures and a video near the end. Enjoy! Taking the the Nami Maid Ferry to the Naminara Republic!

Nami Island Trip

This Friday we left LCI after teaching and took a bus 2 hours outside of the city. We were in the mountains, and our Director rented us a really nice house on the River. We had barbecue and wine made especially for our school from Australia. There was a presentation for "Best Teacher" Award.....and I got one of the two awards! I was happy to know my hard work is so appreciated!Me with some of the Korean staff from LCI......Sarah, Ally and Kara.

Fashion Show!

In Korea, May 5th is Children's Day. It is a National Holiday celebrating children in Korea. The kids get off from school on that day, but the day before is usually a celebration at school in their honor. LCI decided to throw a Crazy Hair/Vibrant Colors Fashion Show. We had so much fun getting dressed up, and Terrence even shaved his hair into a Mohawk for the event! We made homemade popcorn in the classrooms, and ate cotton candy. It was a great day, and we get a day off tomorrow!

We walked to COEX mall on Saturday to buy movie tickets for Iron Man 2 on Sunday. It was a 2 hour walk, and we found a cool fountain on the way.

Yay!!

Terrence bought a bike this weekend! He is pretty excited. As you can see from the picture, it folds in half....to save space in the crazy city I suppose. He stores it in the parking area of our apartment building. The plan is for me to buy one as well!
Buddha's Birthday is coming up here in Korea. You find these lanterns all over the city. They have prayers on them in Korean. In a few weekend there is a parade and all kinds of things to celebrate the Birthday!

Today's hike consisted of some parts in the woods, and LOTS of stairs. Got a great workout by the time I got to the top.
Terrence and I walked around Olympic Park on Saturday. The azaleas were pretty amazing. They were on every trail on the park and blooming like crazy.
Went hiking on Sunday and the entrance to the mountain was through this water art sculpture. Pretty cool!

Today we went to a KBO (Korean Baseball Organization) game. It was awesome. The crowd was great and it was a good game. The only differences outside of the language was they had cheerleaders and no hot dogs. The no hot dogs really felt weird but we got by with fried chicken.

Every day we have show and tell. Each week its goes along with a theme. This week the theme was family. Most of the kids brought in a small picture of their family. My student, Peter, brought in an entire poster full of pictures with English captions that his mom helped him with. I thought it was so cool that he and his mom had put so much work into it!

Last week was Arbor Day in Korea...so we made some hand print trees, and even got out some green paint for the leaves. I thought it would be a huge mess and end up everywhere, but they had great self control. These five year olds never cease to surprise me!

We had a little Easter Party on Friday! We dyed eggs in the morning, then colored them after lunch, and each kids took home a bag filled with tons of candy and their egg, which I convinced them was a baby dinosaur. I'm sure they will be mad on Monday when they tell me they never "hatched" over the weekend!

There is this chain bakery in Seoul called Paris Baguette. We've been here for a while now, and hadn't gone there. We visited this past weekend, and it was amazing. We sampled a cinnamon bun, a bacon french baguette, and some fruit tarts. They were unreal. We have one store 2 minutes from our apartment.

So LCI decided to give the students physical exams today. Of course, the teachers gave the test, because what logical person would hire a nurse or doctor to do so. I was a color blindness tester. The kids had to read numbers on these colored sheets. Funny thing is, half of them don't know there numbers in English. Ohhh how LCI makes me laugh sometimes.

Yellow Dust

So apparently the Yellow Dust, also known as the "Asian Dust" has officially arrived. We were outside around lunchtime and confused by a yellow color in the sky and air. Come to find out its these intense dust storms that will affect us through the Spring. You can see the dirt build up on cars, and you can feel it when you breathe. We plan on getting some masks, for walking around to avoid any respiratory concerns. They have a rating scale for the amount of dirt in the air, which can become to high that even schools are canceled and the entire public is warned to stay indoors.

MMMM.... we went out for Korean Pork Barbecue tonight! Very delicious. It cost us less than 6 bucks a piece to eat a pretty huge meal. We had grilled pork, mushrooms and onions, rice, a cold noodle dish, and pickled veggies. We also tried grilled pig skin...which wasn't half bad.

Dean...the 9th child in my class! He was out last week with the chicken pox. I am having a great time with my class so far. On Friday one of my five year olds kept saying "Megan teacher, Megan teacher", and I turned to him and he flicked my in the forehead with his finger. I couldn't help but laugh, and the other children started to flick themselves and each other. Needless to say we had a long conversation about keeping our hand to ourselves.
